Civic Entertainment
Project Collaborators
MIT Civic Media Lab
Brief
Entertainment in all its myriad forms has greatly influenced how individuals and communities make sense of the world. During my time at the Civic Media Lab my work was focused on understanding how entertainment can be used to drive behavioral change and civic impact. Within this vein we tried to unpack the different facets that came together to make entertainment effective at driving civic impact.
Solution
As a part of my research on civic entertainment a rating mechanism was created that provided a starting point to convert rigorous content analysis done on different mediums of entertainment like film into a measurable form that allowed for comparison across different creative pieces and audience types. This was an easy to use tool for content creators who were producing creative work with a civic mission in the film, theater or radio spaces to design work that compelled audiences to take action.
Process
Content analysis of a selected sample of South Asian films that had both entertainment and civic value.
Conceptualizing the rating criteria and metrics.
Designing the rating charts as a toolkit for content creators and organizations working within the civic space.
Seven ways to create entertainment with impact was published on the India Development Review.
